As we sail into the New Year we must remember to be kind to ourselves, mindfulness exercise and move our bodies; what better way to do this than get on the water with us at The Official Test Centre. The health and well-being benefits of spending time on the water and the ripple effect of the 'blue mind' on mental health is extraordinary. Being on the water can have infinite positive health and wellbeing benefits, including reducing stress, improving mood and increasing feelings of happiness.
Research shows that spending time near water gives us a powerful mental boost, studies show that blue spaces provide an all-round de-stresser! It is not just what water gives, it is what we take from being buoyant a waterfall of endorphins are released and mental restoration and tranquility washes over us! Embracing the restorative powers of water! In this blog I ask the OTC Team Riders what does being on the water do for their health and well-being?
By Emma Nicholson.
OTC Team Rider, Finn Knight, said: "I love being on the water both winter and summer. I’m lucky enough to have just spent some time in warmer climates and had an amazing time riding the swell in Gran Canaria.
"Being on the water gives me a great sense of freedom, great exercise and spending time with friends. I am really looking forward to the lighter nights and being able to hit the water after school, sunset sessions in the harbour are just the best!!"
OTC Team Rider, Scott Norman, said: "Getting on the water is a great way to destress for me. Especially where I’m coming up to my A level exams, it’s nice to be able to forget about them and focus on windsurfing!"
OTC Team Rider, James Hardy said: “Well it does you’re a lot for my health and wellbeing. Firstly it’s good for you physically. Just being on the water makes me feel great, even if the session was short or not gone to plan. Being on the water in any form is just good all round."
OTC Team Rider, Aaron Smith said: "I find that it can be hard to measure/notice changes in your own mood whether big or small, so I always think back to my first time windsurfing after nearly 100 days off the water through injury. Afterwards someone i had only known for a few months said 'Wow you're a different person, I've never seen you smile, let alone one that big! I hope to never be off the water that long again but i am definitely a little grumpier/itching to get on the water the longer I go between sessions, and a lot happier/relax the moment I hit the water"
